Well here we are at the mobile devices. How are we going to deal with them? Crazy that’s how. I just can’t imagine accessing the Internet from a cell phone. The screen is so very small that I can’t understand how anyone will be able to read anything on them. I am still trying to get sites to just work on the Internet Browsers and now I have to think about how my sites are going to be viewed on mobile devices. How and what will have to be done to sites so that a person can view them on a mobile device.
Well the technology is starting and will continue to grow. Adobe has a site where you can post comments and questions in place and it has been a very busy site. It is called Mobile and Devices Cookbook http://www.w3.org/2006/07/Mobile_Web_Design.pdf . Their new Master Collection includes technology to design for the mobile devices. Another interesting item I found is from W3 http://www.w3.org/2006/07/Mobile_Web_Design.pdf .
How are mobile devices going to affect the designing profession? It is going to change the way that we design web sites. There is a CSS style sheet,
http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=HandheldStylesheets , for handheld devices. The designers are working on a style sheet for Zen Garden, http://www.gotomobile.com/archives/handheld-style-sheets-and-getting-to-zen , so that it will be accessible for mobile devices.
This is another fast pace part of web site design. I am interested in designing sites that will work on mobile devices, but I won’t be using them until the screens get a lot bigger.

It does start to feel sort of overwhelming, doesn't it? One more thing I have to keep in mind when starting a site--now it's got to look good on a 3 inch screen. I think that's what I like about a handheld style sheet. It would be fairly easy to do, no harder than throwing in a print style sheet, and would only be used by those who need it. Of course, most devices will have to support the technology before it's practical to use it.
Yes, it is very complex subject. I agree with you, what fun is had by viewing the Web on a three inch screen? I guess in a pinch it would be practical. I still recall surfing the Web on my Razor Motorola cell phone and what a joke it was. It was all HTML tags and links to other sites. No images and not much color. Very plain. That was years ago. Now I would enjoy the Apple iPhone with its large screen.
Adobe already has a program called Mobile Device that came with CS3 Master Collection. Funny, quirky application but does offer a wide range of phone templates to test your site on, with the Japan mobile market holding the largest share of supplied samples.
I am sure mobile devices will eventually become a large way most folks will access the Web. Having the Web "in your pocket" will cut out the need for large computers and seeing that email is the main use for the Web I just see this area exploding in the near future.
It does make you wonder just what is so important that you can't wait to get to a computer to check that email or website, but it is an electronic world now. Everyone wants to have information and services available right now.
